Name of medicine

Lipitor (atorvastatin)

Use drugs

Lipitor is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat) to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood. Accumulation of cholesterol and fat on the walls of your arteries (a process known as atherosclerosis) decreases blood flow and thus oxygen to the heart, brain and other parts of the body. Lowering blood cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina pectoris (chest pain), stroke and heart attack.

Using

Lipitor no prescription comes as a tablet to take it orally. It is usually taken once daily with food or without food. To help you remember that Lipitor, take it around the same time each day. Your doctor may start with a low dose of Lipitor and gradually increase the dose. I continue to take Lipitor even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Lipitor without talking to your doctor. Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet

Classes of drugs and the mechanism

Atorvastatin is an oral drug that lowers blood cholesterol levels. Belongs to a group of drugs referred to as statins which includes lovastatin (Mevacor), simvastatin (Zocor), fluvastatin (Lescol) and pravastatin (Pravachol). All statins, including atorvastatin, prevent the production of cholesterol in the liver by blocking an enzyme that allows cholesterol, HMGCoA reductase. They lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. (LDL cholesterol is considered “bad” cholesterol, which is primarily responsible for the development of ischemic heart disease.) Reduction of LDL cholesterol slows progression and may even reverse coronary heart disease. Unlike other drugs in this class, atorvastatin also can reduce the concentration of triglycerides in the blood. High concentrations of triglycerides in the blood were also associated with ischemic heart disease. Atorvastatin was approved by the FDA in December 1996.
